A Light in the Window

I see the light on.

It’s sitting in your window,

far across the town.

I knew you came back.

.

You went on a journey

and left me a note,

you didn’t say

when you’d be back

but I hoped

you would tell me.

.

I gave you a package

all tied up with string

to protect you

on your trip across the sea,

I now know that it sat

unopened on your door

for who knows how long.

.

I can

take a hint,

but I didn’t,

I don’t,

want to.

.

I avoided

walking past your

house,

looking to see

if there was a light inside.

.

I avoided

thinking about

what once was

and which throw away comments

were really

thrown away.

.

I see the light on.

It’s sitting in your window

far across the town.

I know you came back,

but for my sake

and for yours

I will see that light

as a shuttered window.
