Text vs. Reality

A cloud of texts

flies over my head

like a

thick swarm

of passenger pigeons

blocking out the sun.


The people below and I

begin to stir

in a frenzy.


We start discussing

the racing times

that our pigeons

have said they’ve had

and the activities

we plan to do with our



But passenger pigeons

are extinct,

so after each pigeon lands,

they morph into

their human forms.


A human is as different

from a passenger pigeon

as a person over text is

from a person in bloody flesh.


Some people find that their humans

have feathers in the hair

and a partiality to grains,

others find

their humans

completely lacking

in avian characteristics;

uninterested in the activities planned

to excite their passenger pigeon selves.
