I Wanted To See Myself

When I first got a doll

I felt I had found

A little me

I took her with me everywhere

I showed her everything I saw

And talked to her the way I talk to my head

She was cute

With that little smile

Eyes opening and closing

And legs arrayed graciously

I loved that little doll

But as I got older

The little me

Began to spend more time on the shelf

Looking down on me

I don’t know what she thought of what she saw

Was it a good position

Or a bad mistake

As I grew older

So did the doll

She gathered dust and cobwebs

Gaining a haunted look

In a wizened year

I took her off the shelf and dusted her

I placed her in a spot of sun

Seeing the girl I once had been

Seeing the doll she once had been
