Her Heart

It’s red

At the edges

Her heart is tinged with pink

Where it began to stale

.

With my hand

On the pulsing center

I can hear it thumping

.

In the middle

It is still soft

Sweet

Whole

Innocence is a white strand

Twisting through it

.

When she smiles

I can see past

The face

Frozen in an unhappy shape by surgery

I can see

The love

Pulsing

In a long red river

.

Inspired by Mark Rothko’s “White Center”.
