Limp Handshake

I thought I had

Found the place

Where I finally

Could fit in

Belong

.

But I was mistaken

Their smiles

Were painted on

Ready to slide off

When I wasn’t around

.

I was just a collector card

A “thing”

That they could say

Their little group possessed

Not a friend

An item

.

They tried to make me

Feel slightly wanted

But at the places

They took me to

They always treated me

Different

.

I was held there

For a while

But finally

My hand

Slipped out of their

Limp handshakes

.

Now

I am searching

For the firm grip

That pulls me up

Out of my cloud

And sets a real conversation

And friendship

Roaring in my life
