Schools of Today

Built up

With quality stones

Started

By teaching

Clergy and lay

Schools

Thrive

Packed

Into the world

Like bricks

Building

A better future

.

Their exact proportions

Vary

But their contents

Of students

And teachers

Nervous

Teaching

Learning

Are still there

.

But where

Is the prayer

The goodwill

That sat in those

Hallowed walls

It has been snatched

From the carefully laid

Bricks

The Livingstone

That is

As we speak

Being

Bulldozed

Razed

To the ground

.

No prayer

No religion

Can be mentioned

In these halls

No taboo topics

“No,

We can’t learn

That.

It’s

One of the

Taboos”

.

In schools

That instead

Of

Teaching

Good morals

How to live

And

Life-skills,

Are trying

To

Indoctrinate

Their students

Not send them

To a better world

Teach them

To obey

.

The howling wind

Bites the

Ankles

Of the students

And teachers

Left

Out in the cold

Without love

Without nurture

Only

Ruins

Of where schools

Used to be

.

This was for “A” List Toads (http://withrealtoads.blogspot.com/) and I used the words

prayed
packed
bulldoze
nervous
exact

    1. !! I like to think there is a happy meeting in the middle. Public schools are not Parochial schools. Public schools cater to all – and so must be sensitive. But, with that said, why can’t we teach all view points instead of none at all. I know of some home schoolers who would NOT teach Darwinism or the Big Bang Theory. Just because one is exposed does not mean they will be “doomed”. I’m ranting… but I’ve had so much “exposure” to this issue. Your poem triggers a lot to think about. Thanks.
