The little chick

Sweet and small

Dusky yellow

Jumping around in the classroom

Spent watching it

As it flaps its tiny wings

Ruffling the fuzz

Holding it

Soft and warm

Wishing to never let go

The chick grows older

Getting its first feathers

While everyone

Who watched before

Loses interest

It’s no longer yellow

Or small

They go back to the sandbox

The joy worn off

Watching the chick

Alone now

As the teacher

Picks it up

In a crate

Taking it

Who knows where

Never seeing it again

Yet always

That small yellow head

And soft heartbeat
